No technology is ever likely to be a total panacea for all the problems faced by medical practitioners, and while the developments being made in artificial intelligence (AI) are undoubtedly remarkable, the capacities of AI continue to be overestimated, even within the scientific community. Many counsel for greater caution in assessing the evolution of these new technologies. Technological solutions need to be integrated carefully into the healthcare process, following an open dialogue among all those involved.

This publication presents the proceedings of MIE 2026, the 36th Medical Informatics Europe Conference, held from 25 to 28 May 2026 in Genoa, Italy. The MIE conference series aims to promote research and development in biomedical and health informatics, and the theme of MIE 2026 is Opening the Personal Gate between Technology and Health Care. The conference received a total of 884 submissions, all of which were subjected to a thorough review process. Ultimately, 415 full papers (acceptance rate 71%) were selected for presentation and publication here, together with 91 short communication papers and 117 posters. Topics covered include:
